Be a silversmith in the workshop!

Vectary texture.png

In the 18 Century silver was a significant material, used for the fanciest jewels and household items, bought for the richest people in Germany. The museum currently displays jewels of cultural importance .

The Ott-Pausersche Fabrik museum in Schwäbisch Gmünd catches our eyes, because it is like a workshop, where every tool and station remains the same way that were used 100 years ago when it was still running. Places like this should remain in the sight of the tourists and even moreof the citizens of Schwäbisch Gmünd.

so in this project, our general goal is:

  • to let them know the history of the museum;

  • to teach tourists the process of how to make silver products in a traditional way

Idea finding

  • we made an interview with a goldsmith

  • Trying the process by myself

Persona

Personas illustrate typical representatives of our target group. A wealth of information about their lives makes them understandable as people and enables project participants to identify with them. So we create a student named Stella Colombo as our persona, and from her age, job, lifestyle, personality, goal, conerns 6 different dimentions to understand and consider the motivations and needs of a tourist.

Problem solving

Senses to stimulate

A significant amount of people don‘t go to historical museums because they find them boring or too calm. With that known, we think about how to make museums more playful and engaging for visitors, while at the same time making them learn something new. And then we chose to stimulate three senses with the tour experience:

touch

By using an electronic tablet, the user will be able to stimulate his/her touch sense since they have to complete the gestures by moving the digital tools.

sight

This is probably the most stimulated sense. All the tools, animations and instruction signs will be shown to the user in the electronic tablet screen, so that the user will be able to  see how every step is done.

sound

The everyday sound of the workshop will be included in the tour as a background sound: hammers, mens voices, machines working... and also, as an extra guidance, there will be a voice supporting the instruction signs during the tour.

Chosen technology

In order to make the tour, the user needs to move around the space watching the action somehow. So we decided to use the Augmented Reality and 360 degree camera, which can achive our goal.

ar_edited.jpg

• a highly visual activity

• Possibility of touch interaction

• It highlights objects in the real world

• Is easy to move around with the needed devices

Augmented Reality

  • These panoramic cameras capture everything around you, making for incredibly immersive experiences.

  • The mouse can be dragged to see a different perspective of 360 degrees

Concept: Be a silversmith in the workshop!

After the research, we defined an Augmented Reality tour as a concept. The experience is about interacting with illustrated tools that are shown in the screen in each specific station. The user will be able to follow every step as if she/he would be living a normal silversmith work journey, this with the help of voice guidance and instruction signs while the background sounds make her/him feel immersed in the context.

3D Modeling

We recorded all the processes of making candlesticks that we learned at the museum, and we obtained permission from the museum manager to use

apanoramic camera to film the museum and combine it with the modeled virtual objects for a virtual experience.
